In a resplendent display of global unity and shared aspirations, the University of Mysore played host to a pivotal discussion on “Harmony in Diversity: Nurturing Universal Responsibility & Compassionate World in the 21st Century” on February 9th, 2024. Organized jointly by the University of Mysore, Global Cultural Society, Voluntary Tibet Advocacy Group, FISA-M, and in collaboration with the Tibet House, the event garnered attention from an esteemed audience comprising international students, dignitaries, scholars, and the press.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s enduring message of universal responsibility and compassion resonated throughout the discourse. Emphasizing the imperative of inner peace and empathy as the bedrock of societal harmony, His Holiness set the tone for the discussions.

Honorable Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the President of the Central Tibetan Administration, underscored the interconnectedness of humanity and the need for a holistic understanding of diverse cultures. He articulated the significance of knowing each other’s backgrounds to foster compassion and understanding in an increasingly interconnected world. Sikyong’s speech particularly shed light on the situation in Tibet, illustrating how the fate of one region can have profound implications on global geopolitics and the collective consciousness of humanity.

Vice Chancellor Prof. N. K Lokanath invoked the legacies of visionaries such as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and Martin Luther King Jr., urging participants to translate compassion into tangible action. His call for ‘compassion in action’ resonated deeply, urging attendees to embody the principles espoused by these great leaders.

Cultural Exchange and Engagement: 

The afternoon session witnessed enriching presentations by international students from over 20 countries, offering insights into their respective cultures, traditions, and histories. This cultural exchange fostered dialogue and understanding, exemplifying the spirit of unity in diversity.

During the afternoon session on Breaking Cultural Barriers, Mr. Lharong, the Coordinator of the Voluntary Tibet Advocacy Group, eloquently represented Tibet. His presentation provided invaluable insights into Tibetan culture, history, and the challenges faced by Tibetans.

A highlight of the event was the exhibition cantered on the biography and commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, alongside an exploration of India-Tibet relations. It was held at the centre of the University’s campus. This interactive showcase, jointly organized by various stakeholders including V-TAG, Global Cultural Society, and the Tibet House, garnered widespread attention and appreciation. Additionally, the exhibition was successfully organized at the biggest mall in Mysore city, Nexus Centre City, for a week, visited by hundreds of people prior to the Tibetan New Year.

 

Community Participation and Collaboration: 

The success of the event was made possible through collaborative efforts from various entities, including the Tibet Museum, Lhamo Bistro, Mysore Tibetan Students Association, and the Mysore Tibetan Community. Their contributions added depth and richness to the discourse, facilitating a deeper understanding of Tibetan culture and heritage.

Historic Visit and Future Endeavors: 

The visit of Honorable Sikyong Penpa Tsering marked a historic moment, symbolizing the growing ties between the Central Tibetan Administration and esteemed institutions like the University of Mysore. The overwhelming response and positive feedback received underscored the significance of such initiatives in fostering global solidarity and understanding.

Special acknowledgment was extended to the Chief Representative Office of the Central Tibetan Administration for their pivotal role in arranging Sikyong’s schedule, facilitating his participation in this landmark event.
